Champions League Finals 2006-Paris BARCELONA vs ARSENAL

Posted by Sanjeev on 18 May, 2006

90+4 mins: It's all over, and Barcelona are Champions League winners.

90+3 mins: Larsson is booked for preventing Almunia releasing the ball quickly, and we're in the last 30 seconds.

90+2 mins: Eto'o regains possession and spreads the play via Larsson to Giuly. He shoots from a narrow angle but Almunia gathers.

90+1 mins: Belletti's cross clears the penalty area and goes out for a throw.

90 mins: Three minutes' injury time is all that Arsenal have to get an equaliser.

90 mins: Marquez is caught by Reyes. It's a nothing challenge, but Marquez rolls around like he's been shot. Barcelona may win this game, but they've been involved in a lot of nonsense tonight, not least the card waving every time they get a free-kick.

89 mins: Giuly's shot deflects off Campbell for a corner.

89 mins: Reyes battles hard to win a throw, but Barca manage to clear the danger.

88 mins: Ronaldinho tries to keep the ball in the corner, but the indefatigable Toure nicks the ball off him and breaks quickly.

87 mins: More keep-ball from Barca, running down another minute on the clock before Marquez hacks the ball forward to give it back to Arsenal.

86 mins: Eto'o is caught offside to end a long spell of Barca possession.

85 mins: Reyes replaces Hleb. A last throw of the dice from Wenger.

84 mins: Ronaldinho runs at Campbell but the Arsenal man gets a foot in. The ball breaks to Deco who is chopped down by Toure.

82 mins: Barcelona are just passing the ball around now, with Arsenal's players looking dejected. Can they raise themselves for one last tilt.

81 mins: The substitutes have made the difference for Barcelona as Larsson has now set up two goals, while Belletti has scored his first ever goal for Barcelona. What a time to do it.

80 mins: GOAL – BELLETTI: It's all changed now. Brilliant play from Larsson, cutting the ball back to Belletti who got round Campbell and he then puts the ball through Almunia's legs to give Barca the lead with less than 10 minutes to go.

79 mins: It's all Barca again now, and Arsenal will do well just to get into extra time now.

77 mins: GOAL – ETO'O: Arsenal hearts are broken as Eto'o gets on to Larsson's neat flick and slots the ball to Almunia's left. Arsenal were 13 minutes from glory, but now they need to somehow lift themselves. Arsenal appealed desperately for offside, but a borderline decision went the Spaniards' way. It's the first goal the Gunners have conceded in the Champions League since September.

76 mins: Eboue draws a foul from Iniesta, and Arsenal may have weathered the storm here, getting more and more possession as Barca get more and more frustrated.

75 mins: Barca clear Henry's corner, and the rain is getting heavier in Paris.

74 mins: Flamini replaces Fabregas in atiring Arsenal midfield.

74 mins: Brilliant work from Henry. Entirely isolated up front, against two defenders and he still wins a corner.

73 mins: Ronaldinho gets into the area, but Cole does enough to force him wide and his shot is tame. Goal-kick.

72 mins: Belletti crosses, Larsson tees up Deco but Arsenal scramble clear.

71 mins: Fabregas gets the ball in space, but he shoots wearily wide. There are some very tired Arsenal players out there, but they are edging closer to victory.

71 mins: Belletti replaces Oleguer to no great surprise

70 mins: Barca go quickly forward and Ronaldinho shoots narrowly wide.

70 mins: Another chance for Henry as Arsenal start to get more chances on the break, but he shoots straight at Valdes.

69 mins: Ljungberg breaks and he's chopped down by the struggling Oleguer and earns a booking.

68 mins: Oleguer crosses from the right but itr clears everyone and goes out for a throw despite Eto'o's efforts. Oleguer has been poor tonight.

67 mins: Ljungberg dispossesses Oleguer and runs in on goal, but Valdes makes a fine save to stop Barcelona falling two goals behind.

66 mins: Brilliant play from Fabregas in his own half, drawing a foul from Iniesta to once again relieve the pressure.

65 mins: Larsson tries to play a one-two with Iniesta, but Gilberto intercepts.

64 mins: Arsenal win a free-kick on the edge of their own box.

63 mins: Arsenal break through Fabregas, finding Henry. He in turn picks out Hleb on the right, but he shoots wastefully wide when Fabregas and Henry were up with him.

63 mins: Good move again from Barcelona, but Toure intercepts the cross. Optimistic handball appeals are waved away.

62 mins: Eto'o rolls the ball into Ronaldinho's path, but the Brazilian completely miscues his shot. He is human after all.

61 mins: Unsurprisingly, van Bommel is replaced, and it's a farewell performance for Henrik Larsson.

61 mins: Beautiful corner from Henry. Toure almost got on it but Marquez heads clear.

60 mins: Henry does well to win a corner, pressuring Puyol into putting the ball out.

59 mins: Good catch from Almunia as Deco floats a cross in from the left.

59 mins: Arsenal quickly lose possession again, but they are just 30 minutes from immortality.

58 mins: Arsenal break, and Ljungberg wins a free-kick.

57 mins: Ronaldinho skips past Eboue and clips a cross into the six-yard box but Almunia claws the ball to safety.

56 mins: Ronaldinho hits the free-kick nito the wall, and his rebound deflects wide off Eto'o for a goal-kick.

55 mins: Mesmeric run from Ronaldinho, who is chopped down on the edge of the box by Toure. The Barca players surround the ref waving imaginary cards, which is always annoying. No card is given though.

55 mins: Van Bommel fouls Fabregas, and he surely can't be far away from a booking.

54 mins: Gilberto is pulled up for a foul in midfield.

54 mins: Deco tries to pick out Oleguer, but the ball skips away on the greasy surface for a goal-kick.

53 mins: Almunia has done nothing wrong since coming on, getting down low to his left to make a good save from Iniesta.

52 mins: The ball is helped into the area, but only Eto'o is in the box and Almunia gathers.

51 mins: Henry is fuming and with good reason. He initially loses the ball but gets back brilliantly to regain possession from van Bommel who then kicks the Frenchman. Inexplicabyl the ref gives a Barcelona free-kick and books Henry. Baffling.

50 mins: Van Bommel tries to slip the ball through to Eto'o but Toure blocks him off and Almunia gathers. The two centre-backs have been immense for Arsenal so far tonight, and they need to continue.

49 mins: Giuly cuts back a cross from the right that almost finds van Bommel before Toure clears. Van Bommel then fouls Fabregas to relieve the pressure for the Gunners.

48 mins: Deco finds some space on the edge of the box, but his low shot is well held by Almunia.

48 mins: Olegure crosses low from the right, but Campbell gets it away.

47 mins: Great ball from Iniesta in behind Ljungberg for van Bommel, but his cross is disappointing and sails behind for a goal-kick.

46 mins: Arsenal get the second half underway, knowing they are just 45 minutes away from a sensational victory. Can they hold on to the lead given to them by Campbell five minutes before half time? Iniesta has come on for Barca in place of Edmilson.

HT: Barcelona 0 Arsenal 1

45+4 mins: Fabregas wins a free-kick, and that is the last action of a dramatic first half. The game hinges currently on two key decisions. First the ref didn't play advantage to deny Giuly a goal in the incident that saw Lehmann rightly dismissed for hauling down Eto'o. Then he gave a free-kick after a shocking dive from Eboue spoiled a brilliant forward run. But the Barcelona defending from the set-piece was poor, allowing Campbell to plant a free header beyond Valdes for his first ever European goal. It's been frantic Barcelona pressure since then, and the question now is whether Arsenal can hold out against Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Deco, Giuly and co for another 45 minutes. If they do, it will surely be the greatest Champions League-winning performance of all time.

45+3 mins: Arsenal break, but he's completely isolated and forced to shoot from distance. It's well wide.

45+2 mins: It might just be Arsenal's night, as Eto'o spins brilliantly away from Campbell, shoots and Almunia does brilliantly to get a fingertip to the shot and divert it onto the post.

45+2 mins: Deco's cross looks set to fall to Eto'o, but Toure gets up high to head clear.

45+1 mins: Eboue seems to have recovered from whatever problem he had, and makes a good challenge on Deco.

45 mins: Fantastic challeneg from Toure to stop Eto'o in his tracks.

45 mins: There will be four minutes of injury time.

44 mins: Ronaldinho gets onto Deco's pass, skips past two challenges but Toure dispossesses the Brazilian. Arsenal must get to half time without conceding.

43 mins: Arsenal break with pace through Hleb and then Henry, and van Bronckhorst fouls Henry.

42 mins: Oleguer wastefully goes for goal from on the right when he should have looked to cross with team-mates well placed in the box.

41 mins: Giuly wins a throw on the right as Barcelona look to bounce back.

40 mins: Long ball intended for Giuly is overhit and out for a throw.

39 mins: Eboue has gone down injured, and that could be bad news for Arsenal in this rollercoaster first half.

38 mins: Ljungberg tries to break, but Oleguer gets across to make the challenge.

37 mins: GOAL – CAMPBELL: Well it was never a free-kick, but Arsenal won't mind that. Great free-kick from Henry, and Barcelona just don't pick up Campbell's run. He rises to plant a powerful header beyond Valdes and give Arsenal the lead against all the odds.

37 mins: Great run from Eboue down the right ends with a disgraceful dive from the Arsenal full-back. But he fools the referee and Arsenal have a dangerous free-kick.

36 mins: Arsenal play it short and look to keep possession for a while.

36 mins: Rare moment of respite for Arsenal as Cole breaks down the left and is fouled by van Bommel.

35 mins: Again Ronaldinho picks up the ball and picks out a beatiful run across the box by Giuly, but again Cole is there to smother the threat.

34 mins: Ronaldinho slips the ball into Giuly again, but this time it's Campbell defending stoutly to prevent a scoring chance.

33 mins: Van Bommel breaks from midfield, but Almunia is out of his area quickly to hoof clear. Good goalkeeping.

33 mins: Barcelona are frequently looking for the pace of Giuly on the right, but on this occasion the ball is overhit and Arsenal have a goal-kick.

32 mins: Fabregas hauls down his international team-mate Puyol in midfield.

31 mins: Giuly tries to get on the end of Oleguer's lofted pass, but Almunia is there to gather.

30 mins: Barcelona are playing the ball around patiently in midfield, waiting for the chance to split Arsenal's defence.

29 mins: Eboue stumbles and gives the ball away to Edmilson in midfield.

28 mins: Ronaldinho wins a free-kick after a foul by Cole, and Arsenal are finding it desperately hard to get ahold of the ball now as Barca dominate midfield.

27 mins: Cole does brilliantly to prevent Ronaldinho's wicked pass finding the run of Giuly. Fantastic defending, as it was a cast-iron penalty if he got it wrong.

26 mins: Puyol tries to find Eto'o on the left, but it sails over his head and out of play for an Arsenal throw.

25 mins: Mexico captain Marquez tries a speculative shot from distance, but it sails wide.

24 mins: Good run from Ljungberg down the elft, but eventually Oleguer gets a foot in.

23 mins: Henry is caught from behind by Marquez, and this gasme could boil over here.

22 mins: Arsenal need to regain their composure, as Eboue is booked for a wild lunge on Deco. After 50 years without a red card in the final of Europe's premier club competition, we could have seen two in five minutes.

21 mins: The game eventually restarts, and Ronaldinho puts it wide. In a way Arsenal have got off lightly. It was a clear-cut red card, but if the referee had delayed his whistle Arsenal would also be a goal down.

19 mins: Spare a though for Pires – he is substituted to allow reserve keeper Almunia to come on, but at least Arsenal are still level. But they have a free-kick to defend, right on the edge of the box.

18 mins: OFF – LEHMANN: Dramatic scenes, and Lehmann is sent off. Ronaldinho played Eto'o in, and he skipped round Lehmann, and the big German hauls him down on the edge of the box. Giuly slots the ball home, but the whistle has already gone for a free-kick. But the referee has no option but to dismiss the German keeper, who becomes the first man sent off in a Champions League final.

17 mins: Gilberto gives the ball away to Deco, but Lehmann is well placed to catch a fierce drive from the Portuguese international.

16 mins: Great run from Ronaldinho, jinking past Cole and Ljungberg before standing up a good cross, but Gilberto heads clear.

16 mins: Gilberto is given room in midfield to pick out the run of Henry. is control is instant, but his attempt to find Pires is cut out by van Bommel, who did well to track the Frenchman's runs.

15 mins: Van Bommel almost gives the ball away to Pires in his own defensive third, but Puyol is able to hack clear.

14 mins: Fabregas whips in the free-kick. Valdes does well to claim under pressure from Campbell. The referee decides it was unfair pressure from the Arsenal centre-half, and it's a Barcelona free-kick.

13 mins: Ljungberg is clumsily brought down wide on Arsenal's left by Oleguer.

12 mins: Decent strike from Ronaldinho, whipping the ball up and over the wall, but it flashes a yard wide of the target. Just signs that Barcelona are beginning to find their feet though.

12 mins: Barcelona do win a free-kick about 35 yards from goal as Edmilson is brought down by Eboue. This could be just within Ronaldinho range.

11 mins: Ronaldinho and Deco look to link up on the edge of the Arsenal area. Ronaldinho goes to ground and appeals forlornly for a free-kick.

10 mins: Hleb tries to turn the ball into the path of Fabregas but finds only Edmilson, who brings the ball out for Barcelona.

9 mins: The ball is spread wide to Giuly again, but this time Cole makes a fine challenge, and the ball rebounds off Giuly last for an Arsenal goal-kick.

9 mins: Giuly dispossesses Cole on the right and bursts into the area. With limited options in the box, Giuly sends a stinging drive goalwards, but it never really troubles Lehmann who saves comfortably.

8 mins: Good ddefending from Eboue, holding off Eto'o on the Barca left and eventually drawing a foul from the Cameroon hitman.

7 mins: Eto'o does well down the elft and gets his cross in. It falls to Ronaldinho, but the great man's first touch lets him down and Pires spirits the ball away for Arsenal.

6 mins: Henry breaks again down the right, but this time a perfectly timed tackle from Puyol halts his charge. Will Arsenal live to regret not taking advantage of this flying start?

5 mins: Arsenal are rampant and another rapid break down the left is only halted when Henry is harshly pulled up for a foul on Marquez. That move started with a loose pass from Giuly, and Barcelona just haven't settled.

4 mins: Corner taken short, and Henry goes for goal, again forcing a good save from Valdes.

3 mins: Golden chance for Henry as early as the third minute. Shambolic defending as Henry is allowed to get in front of his marker and control Eboue's low cross. He's in on Valdes' goal, but the Barcelona kepper is out brilliantly to make a fantastic save, but that should have been 1-0 to Henry.

2 mins: Fabregas tries to bend the ball into the path of Henry, but Marquez is there to intercept.

2 mins: Edmilson fouls Fabregas in midfield.

1 mins: Marquez looks long for Eto'o – who has started on the left with Ronaldinho central – but overhits his pass.

1 mins: Barcelona get the 2006 UEFA Champions League final underway.

Pre-match: Robert Pires is given a place in Arsenal's Champions League final starting line-up tonight at the expense of Jose Antonio Reyes. There are starts too for Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell – the only Englishmen in Arsene Wenger's 17-man squad – for the match against La Liga champions Barcelona, undoubtedly the biggest game in Arsenal's proud history. Arsenal become the first London club to play in the biggest game in club football, and any Parisians in a sold-out Stade de France tonight are firmly and understandably behind Arsene Wenger's men.

Barca line up as expected, with playmaker Ronaldinho lining up behind Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o and Mark van Bommel preferred in midfield to Andres Iniesta. Only two men in this game – Giuly and Deco – have ever played in a Champions League final before.

Teams:

Barcelona: Valdes, Oleguer, Marquez, Puyol, van Bronckhorst, Deco, Edmilson, van Bommel, Giuly, Eto'o, Ronaldinho.
Subs: Jorquera, Belletti, Motta, Xavi, Larsson, Sylvinho, Iniesta.

Arsenal: Lehmann, Eboue, Toure, Campbell, Cole, Pires, Gilberto Silva, Fabregas, Hleb, Ljungberg, Henry.
Subs: Almunia, Reyes, Bergkamp, van Persie, Flamini, Senderos, Clichy.

Referee: Terje Hauge (Norway)
